Built in the late 1290s the castle used to be a stronghold of Oslo. It is believed to be the most haunted place in all Norway. The rumors talk of a demon dog that guards the gate of the fort named Malcanisen. Others report seeing a ghost of a woman with no facial features, her name is Mantelgeisten. She is usually seen wandering around the castle and always in the direction of her chamber.
Built in the 1100s The Ancient Ram Inn is an operational restaurant and a hotel that attracts tourists, who are willing to get terrified by screams and moving furniture. The current owners of the Inn state that it was built on a Pagan burial ground where children were sacrificed. Almost no one can stay the whole night there, visitors would run away from visions of a little girl, cries of children and sensations of being pushed down onto the bed by a male demon.
Also known as the “Suicide Forest” it is located at the footing of Mount Fuji. About 500 suicides have been reported in Aokigahara since the 1950s. Locals claim that demons live in that forest and if anyone walks in to spend the night never comes back alive. A large deposit of Iron which causes compass to malfunction makes it easy to get lost. It is suggested to mark your path with a string in order to find the way out if you ever decide to visit this ominous forest.
A “village within a village” the Aradale Asylum is an enormous complex that started its operation in 1867. It is estimated that more 13,000 people have died inside these walls and not all due to natural causes. Out of many ghosts who haunt the building the most known is Nurse Kerry who haunts the women’s wing. Visitors would report weird sensations, touching, feeling cold, unexplained drafts running through the building and loud noises like banging or screaming which would come from unoccupied rooms.
Built in 1625, Ballygally Castle has a long eerie history. A dark fate has struck the family of the original owner Lord James Shaw. The story is dimm on whether his wife, Lady Shaw has fallen, jumped or was pushed off the top of the castle to her death. Her ghost remains living in the castle. Despite the ghost being friendly, there are reports of seeing her knocking on doors then disappearing. Today the castle operates as a hotel and one of the rooms “The Ghost Room” is dedicated to Lady Shaw.
Only the most adventurous should spend the night at Benson hotel. It is believed to be haunted by its late owner Mr. Benson, who haunts the hallways, rooms and the bar. Visitors report their drinks being knocked over, glasses disappear and bottles of liquor being turned upside down. Some have seen him walking down the stairs and then disappearing, others would mention taps on the shoulder and hearing whispers as if someone was trying to pass by. Other tourists have claimed to have seen a little boy jump out from behind the dining table in their room and then disappear. It is believed that it is a mischievous ghost of Mr. Benson’s son. He would usually appear on the 7th, 8th and 9th floor.
Built in 1876, Borgvattnet is a remote rural area breakfast and bed where lots of strange happenings have been reported since the 1960s. Guests would claim to hear footsteps, music and the sound of three women crying coming from the inside of the Inn. The owners will reward you with a certificate that would confirm that you stayed the entire night at their establishment.
Vist the spookiest place in Florence, Hotel Burchianti is believed to be infested with ghosts. With children skipping down the hallway at night, a woman knitting in the lobby’s chair, and a maid doing her cleaning shifts by folding laundry in the early morning. For the biggest thrills, stay at Fresco Room, where Bunito Mussolini once stayed. A room where the beautifully decorated ceiling is trumped with an eerie presence. Those fearless travelers who have spent the night at that room have described a feeling of being watched and an unknown entity kissing their faces with an icy breath.
This 800 year old fortress scares the hell out of even the most non-ghost believers who can’t even spend the night in it. The castle is rumored to be haunted by Lady Catherine who’s parents wouldn’t let her see the love of her life, so she locked herself in the top room and starved herself to death. She has shown up as a shadowy, smokey figure in a number of guest’s photographs. When visiting make sure to have dinner at the dining room, the castle’s former dungeon, where people have reported seeing stumping chairs and furniture being moved on it’s own. Within labyrinths of hallways and rooms others have reported hearing tapping on doors late at night, some even had their hair pulled.
Edinburgh Castle is considered the most famous historic location of Scotland and the most haunted one. Dungeons, ballrooms, fortification walls, some dated back more than 900 years. Ancient Fortress attracts hundreds of people who would report sightings of colonial prisoners from American Revolutionary War, French prisoners for Seven Year War, they even report seeing a ghost of a dog wandering in the castle’s pet cemetery.
Built in 1888, this gorgeous chateau-style hotel is located by the Rocky Mountains in Banff National Park. The hotel is known for being occupied by quite a few ghosts. One of them is believed to be a bride who died on her wedding day by falling down the stone staircase. Another, more welcoming ghostly resident of the hotel is Sam the bellman, who worked there until 1975. After his death he would come back to the hotel to continue working there. The ghost would appear to be trying to help people with their bags before disappearing.
Built in 1810, Hospicio Cabañas is one of the spookiest haunted places in Mexico. Throughout its history the building was used as asylum, military barracks and an orphanage. There’re many ghosts that haunt the building, many of them are children who can be seen running in the hallways. There’s also a mystery surrounding the building’s giant clock which would stop every time a child would lose its life.
Several English national cricket team members fled a 153-year old Hotel in fear of ghostly encounters back in 2014. They would report sudden heat waves, light flickering, and a ghostly presence in their rooms during the night. Ghosts and paranormal activity has long been associated with The Langham Hotel, it is believed to house some elite spirits such as former resident Emperor Louis Napoleon III and a German Prince who jumped to his death from the upper level window.
Built at the end of the 19th century Larnach Castle was meant to serve as a residence of Whilliam Larnach, a famous local politician. Most notable is a 3,000 square foot ballroom which Larnach built for his daughter’s birthday. She later died at age 26 from typhoid, Kate has been haunting the castle ever since. Paranormal investigators have visited the castle and reported eerie whispers in the ear and tapping on the shoulder which would occur in that same ballroom.
The hotel started its operations in 1855 and was owned by Harvey Parker who died in 1884. There are reports of guests seeing him in guest rooms. A woman reported seeing him sitting in her room and asking about her stay. There’s also lots of paranormal activity on the 3rd floor. Especially in room 303 where visitors report seeing dark shadows moving around and water faucets turning on its own. Another mystery surrounds the hotel’s elevator which would always stop on the 3rd floor without anyone pushing the button. Charles Dickens would regularly visit the hotel and would always stay on the 3rd floor and actress Charlotte Cushmman died on the 3rd floor in 1876. On the 3rd floor and throughout the entire hotel visitors would report hearing rocking chairs coming from unoccupied rooms, even though there were no rocking chairs. You can visit this place, if you dare, it’s rather affordable. Fun fact, this hotel served as yet another inspiration for Stephen King’s novel, when he stayed in room 303. Movie “1408” with John Cusac was based on that novel.
Underground tunnels beneath Paris became a burial ground for more than 6 million people, due to the shortage of space in a local cemetery in 1749. The catacombs are filled with bones and skulls of people, which are neatly stacked together. When entering the catacombs the overhead sign declares: ‘Stop! This is the Empire of the Dead!’
Despite the already eerie history there are a few recent stories, One of them being from the 1990s when a group of sight monitors found an abandoned camera in one of the passageways. After reviewing the newfound footage, it appeared that this camera belonged to a man who got lost all by himself in the catacombs looking for a way our of the maze, but someone or something was messing with him. Until the point where the main is visibly distressed and drops the camera making the video come to a stop. The crew recounted hearing eerie, unexplained voices and seeing shadows moving in front of him.
The workers searched for the man but was never found and till this day it is unknown what actually happened to him.
Looking for a perfect hotel to not sleep in Sydney? Dare to visit this old seamen rest house and an ex-hospital for the patients with bubonic plague in the early 1900s. The most haunted is room 8, where a spirit of a sailor resides and scares the visitors by appearing walking around the room or laying in bed. Staff members have also reported unexplained heavy footsteps over creaky floors during the night.

The Valley of The Kings consists of some 63 tombs of great pharaohs. It’s basically a royal cemetery, no wonder it is haunted. People would see shadows moving inside of the tombs and some have seen full body apparitions.
